"THERE DO EXIST ENQUIRING MINDS, which long for the truth of the heart, seek it, strive to solve the problems set by life, try to penetrate to the essence of things and phenomena and to penetrate into themselves. If a man reasons and thinks soundly, no matter which path he follows in solving these problems, he must inevitably arrive back at himself, and begin with the solution of the problem of what he is himself and what his place is in the world around him. For without this knowledge, he will have no focal point in his search. Socrates’ words, “Know thyself” remain for all those who seek true knowledge and being."

Tolle: "... you create a mind-made self"
"All the misery on the planet arises due to a personalized sense of "me" or "us." That covers up the essence of who you are. When you are unaware of that inner essence, in the end you always create misery. It's as simple as that. When you don't know who you are, you create a mind-made self as a substitute for your beautiful divine being and cling to that fearful and needy self.
Protecting and enhancing that false sense of self then becomes your primary motivating force."
Eckhardt Tolle

hi. tolle's interesting - surprising too. because his perspective does not seem learned, he just knows it by himself. gangaji is another contemporary who speaks clear as a bell.
ReplyDeletethey say all roads lead to the same place, but i find myself pondering, wondering, do they? maybe "essence" allowed to manifest naturally "works" or subjects itself to be worked upon, or maybe there's different stages ....
maybe the question itself is a diversion.
nice to revisit your blog again.
Hello 3hree:
ReplyDeleteTolle was formally educated in psychology and philosophy and has stated that he did various [unnamed] methods.
What I hear when listening to him are ideas that can be found in many spiritual disciplines, the works of new age gurus and even Fourth Way work, which he apparently has verified experientially for himself. He deliberately does not align himself with any one established school of thought and suggests one stick with whatever method one is studying to attain self knowledge and real consciousness. His perspective is not truly unique but I love his presentation its simplicity. That he is able to share with such unfailing clarity so many lawful truths is truly a gift to himself and to us. He states that his aim is to raise the consciousness of humanity because, at this point in time, it is very necessary for as many people to awaken as possible. What I like most about him is that he speaks in today's language for today's man and woman. Also he is alive; this is a plus. To hear what a man says directly from his own mouth as one is looking at him is always huge help.
Nice to hear from you again.
Peace
